Enhancing Capacity for Marine Conservation
Turning knowledge and skills into
on-ground action
Backed with a strong Learning & Training Program, TNC-CTC has developed a range of training curricula based on an extensive experience in on-site conservation, policy work, and combined with insights from research conducted around the world. Our goal is to transfer knowledge on planning and management of MPAs as an effective management tool for marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. Furthermore, the training program will build the capacity of conservation practitioners in effective natural resources planning, management and evaluation of MPAs in Indonesia and beyond. Currently, more than 700 people have participated in our training sessions. Our work sites serve as training and practice grounds for training participants and alumni, directly enhancing local capacity. Staffed by a mobile interdisciplinary team and equipped with facilities such as a classroom and workshop venue, a library, fast Internet access and GIS capacity, TNC-CTC is well positioned to take the lead in marine conservation in Indonesia and the Southeast Asian region, providing training for government agencies, co-management partners, the tourism industry, students, academia, community members, NGOs, and the media. MPA planning and management support training Training on MPA planning and management. Provides participants with recent insights on MPA management and design. Also, participants will learn the basics of population dynamics of exploited species, and how these dynamics relate to resource use. While the course uses examples from all over the world, there is a strong focus on the Indonesian context. This training is designed as a 5-day session to complete all of the 31 training modules but can be modified based on specific needs.
Training on systematic MPA site/network design using MARXAN. Provides participants with skills to integrate critical habitats (important for biodiversity protection and fishery), cost features (local socio-economic conditions) and resilient principles in selecting priority areas for conservation (No-Take Areas) with the help of a software program MARXAN (linked to GIS ArcView). The training uses examples from Wakatobi National Park, Indonesia (for site-level design) and Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea (for network-level design). This training is designed as a 3-day session to complete all the GIS ArcView together with MARXAN modules. Conservation Action Planning (CAP) Training. Provides participants with a “CAP” tool (an excel workbook) to assist in effectively developing management plans for MPAs at the site level. The training uses examples from Wakatobi and Komodo National Parks (IUCN Category II Protected Areas) together with Raja Ampat and Derawan (IUCN Category VI Protected Areas). This training is designed as a 5-day session to complete all the CAP modules using exercises in the CAP excel workbook. MPA management training Field training on monitoring. Provides participants with the skills needed to develop protocols and conduct field monitoring at their own sites and MPAs.The monitoring is specifically designed to facilitate adaptive management by informing managers on the level of success of management actions. It also ensures a field presence by management authority. Depending on the type of monitoring, the duration of the training may vary from 3–10 days until protocols are completed and staff are ready to conduct field monitoring.
Teacher training.
Provides participants
(teachers) with materials to develop a 10-hour curricula on coral reefs,
fisheries and marine conservation which they can incorporate into their
main curricula (Science class). This training is designed as a 3-day
session to complete all of the training modules.
